This is a needed step, as there are many scam forex brokers that try to lure you into trading with them by offering too attractive bonuses. Such bonuses seem to be quite interesting, yet when you start examining the terms and conditions, you can clearly see that in the best case you will just lose your time...and in the worst case - your money.

Example of tricky terms and conditions
Let’s illustrate this with an example. Recently you could have heard about the struggles IronFX had been going through in China and there were also quite a lot of people commenting on the forums about refused withdrawals. Most probably IronFX wanted to attract additional traders and what’s the best to do it? Right, with a no deposit forex trading account. So an offer of free 25 USD may sound attractive to novice traders. Well, it could be quite attractive unless you examine the terms and conditions, especially the following point:

10. Following receipt of the Bonus and in order to be eligible to request a withdrawal of funds, the client must complete 2 lots turnover and 1 deposit, irrespective of the amount..If the Client requests a withdrawal of funds from his account (or requests an internal transfer of funds from one account to another), IronFX may at its discretion decide to remove, proportionally, the granted Bonus prior to proceeding with any Client’s withdrawal request based on the Client’s profit and/or loss ratio. Provided that IronFX proceeds with the withdrawal, subtraction or deletion of the Bonus from the Clients’ account(s), such action shall not give rise to any cause of action, liability or remedy against IronFX.

So if we translate this point into more human language, it means that you can get 25 USD of free money on a trading account, but if you want to withdraw anything, you would need to complete a deposit. Next to it, even if you made a deposit, traded 2 lots and then want to withdraw your bonus and profit (if any), IronFX may simply cancel the bonus. Does it sound like a fair deal? You make the conclusion. To me it seems that it only proves that taking a look at the terms and conditions is vital before engaging in any type of a forex promotions.

Main info to look for at the terms and conditions
Not every bonus offer has tricks inside of it, yet there are a few items to keep an eye on when participating in a certain deposit bonus campaign of a broker. Below I will provide a quick checklist of the three most important items.

Geographical Restriction
Even though a broker may accept traders from most of the countries, it doesn’t mean that the bonus offer is available in your county. It is often the case that the broker accepts traders from your country, but no bonus is given on your deposits to the residence of your country. This is why you should certainly check on geo restrictions before making a deposit.

Turnover Requirement
Nobody gives money for free and forex brokers are not an exception. When you are getting your deposit bonus, you are expected to complete a certain amount of the volume before you can withdraw the bonus. Sometimes this requirement is just crazy and can be around 1 USD per 1 lot, which is roughly 10% of the spread on EURUSD (assuming the spread is 1 pips). I wouldn’t recommend to settle for anything lower than 5 USD per lot, while 10 USD per lot or more is a preferred volume.

Expiration Period
Not every broker gives a bonus with an expiration period, yet most of the brokers do. Usually you are not only expected to complete a certain turnover, but also to perform this within a given amount of time. There is nothing bad about this point, what is important is that this expiration period is realistic, especially in relation to the required volume. In other words, there is a big difference between completing 100 lots of volume during 360 days and 30 days to unlock your 1,000 USD of the bonus.
