Stark divide as Clinton, Trump talk foreign policy
Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump laid out their thoughts on foreign policy during a televised forum Wednesday night, with Clinton touting her years of experience and Trump railing against America’s generals.
The candidates fielded questions from a crowd of military veterans and NBC moderator Matt Lauer for about a half hour each at the “Commander in Chief Forum” held on the USS Intrepid in New York, although they appeared separately.
Clinton was grilled on her use of private emails during her term as secretary of state. “It was a mistake to have a personal account. I would certainly not do it again,” Clinton said.
She also admitted that voting to authorize the invasion of Iraq in 2002, when she was a senator, was wrong. “I think that the decision to go to war in Iraq was a mistake,” she said. “ And I have said that my voting to give President Bush that authority was, from my perspective, my mistake.”
“I also believe that it is imperative that we learn from the mistakes,” Clinton continued, saying she was in the best position to make sure such mistakes don’t happen again and asking to be judged on the totality of her record.
Clinton also dismissed criticism that she was hawkish and too interventionist. “I view force as a last resort, not a first choice,” she said. “I will do everything in my power to make sure that our men and women in the military are fully prepared for any challenge that they may have to face on our behalf.”
Trump, meanwhile, sharply criticized the military’s top leaders, saying their ranks have been “reduced to rubble” under the Obama administration and that the military “is very sadly depleted.” When asked if he knew better than the generals on how to defeat the Islamic State — a claim Trump has publicly made — he said the current crop of generals are “embarrassing for our country,” and that if, as president, he were to ask his generals for advice, “They’ll probably be different generals.”
“We have had the worst and you could even say the dumbest foreign policy,” Trump said, while offering no specific policies.
As has been the case through the campaign, Trump remained vague on foreign policy details, and at times dropped troubling comments, such as praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin. “If he says great things about me, I’m going to say great things about him,” Trump said, dismissing a question regarding the fact that under Putin, Russia has moved to expand its military influence while attempting to undermine America’s, and is the prime suspect in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee. “Well, nobody knows that for a fact,” Trump said, noting that Putin has “great control over his country.”
Trump also defended a 2013 tweet he sent that said sexual assaults in the military were essentially inevitable, and repeated his false assertion that he opposed the Iraq war before it began.
